BARCELONA: ADAPTATION OF CERD\u00c0\u2019S PLAN TO THE MOBILITY OF THE 21st CENTURY.\u00a0<\/b>NEW CHALLENGES OF URBAN AND INTERURBAN MOBILITY<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n

The Reform and Extension Plan of the city of Barcelona, known as \u201ePla Cerd\u00e0\u201c (1859), was designed to improve an unhealthy and oppressed city enclosed by its city walls. Concerning mobility, the plan structured the city connecting with its surrounding areas on three different levels (the mediterranean coast, the Spanish peninsula and Europe). The inside consists of grid-like streets (aligned with the direction of the wind) of a generous width that anticipated the coming of motorized vehicles. Furthermore, in its forward-looking vision, the plan already incorporated railroad lines.<\/span><\/p>\n

48h Open House Barcelona is presenting a talk between different institutions and technicians who are working for the mobility of the city: A technician of the metropolitan area of Barcelona will explain how interurban mobility is efficiently planned and laid out for the first and second surrounding belt. A\u00a0 representative of the city hall of Barcelona will speak about urban mobility and how new models, that are being introduced to reduce air pollution, turn Cerd\u00e0\u2019s plan upside down. Finally, we will look at the transverse vision and opinion of an architect, promoter and independent consultant of institutions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

XAVIER MARI\u00d1O<\/b><\/p>\n

Trained architect of the ETSAB-UPC (Escola T\u00e8cnica Superior d’Arquitectura de Barcelona) since 2003, he developed his professional career mainly in the world of urban and territorial planning of the public sector, with the exception of an intense phase (2007-2011) working on urban and building projects and in the private sector.<\/span><\/p>\n

His experience in the urbanistic world starts in 1998, when he collaborated with the department of Urbanism and territorial planning of the ETSAB-UPC, participating in studies, urban projects and urban planning of the metropolitan area, coordinated by architects Maria Rubert de Vent\u00f3s and Josep Parcerisa i Bund\u00f3. In 2005 he started his function as external technical advisor of the AMB (\u00c0rea Metropolitana de Barcelona) until 2007.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since 2011 he is forming part of the direction of urbanistic services of the AMB. Firstly as architect of the territorial planning service and director, where he participated among other things in the drafting of the special plan of protection and improvement of the Agrarian Parc of the Baix Llobregat and formed part of the technical presentation of the territorial commission of urbanism of the metropolitan area. Since 2015 he is the head of service of the implementation of the PDU (directional plan of the metropolitan area), coordinating all the connecting jobs for the completion of the PDU.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Parallel to this, he coordinated and collaborated in different articles, publications and expositions; in addition to his involvement as visiting professor for different classes of masters and postgrades connected to urban planning at different public and private universities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

MARIA SISTERNAS<\/b><\/p>\n

Maria Sisternes is an expert in urban transformation with solid knowledge in the field of social sciences.<\/span><\/p>\n

Trained architect of the ETSAB-UPC (Escola T\u00e8cnica Superior d’Arquitectura de Barcelona),\u00a0 she obtained a Master MSC of City Design and Social Sciences at the London School of Economics. She has broad experience in the field of city design and urban consulting. She was the director of projects of urban living at the city hall of Barcelona between 2012 and 2015. She collaborates regularly with the newspaper \u201eDiari Ara\u201c and the late night news of Barcelona television \u201eBetev\u00e9\u201c and is council member of the organisation “Redacci\u00f3 del M\u00f3n de Dem\u00e0\u201c (planning of tomorrows world).<\/span><\/p>\n

She participates in different global urban conferences and has worked for local administrations and international organizations like the network of mediterranean cities \u201eMedcit\u00e9s\u201c. At the moment she is leading \u201eMediaurban\u201c, the agency of urban content of the Mediapro group.<\/span><\/p>\n

XAVI MATILLA<\/strong><\/p>\n

Xavi Matilla is an architect and urbanist, born in Terrassa (Barcelona) in 1975 and educated at the ETSAB-UPC (Escola T\u00e8cnica Superior d’Arquitectura de Barcelona).<\/span><\/p>\n

He pursued his professional career in different prestigious architecture offices. 1999-2000 at \u201cBAMMParquitectes\u201d and 2000-2013 at \u201cJornet-Llop-Pastor arquitectes\u201d, where he coordinated different projects, some of which being the \u201cPOUM de Montmel\u00f3\u201d (awarded with the urbanism prize of the XI Spanish Architecture Bienale 2011) or the urban regeneration project of the Sant Jaume neighborhood of Tortosa (winner of the Catalonia Urbanism Prize 2012).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2013 he co-founded \u201cTerritoris XLM\u201d with architect M\u00f2nica Beguer. 2016 they won the certificate of merit of the Catalonia Urbanism Prize 2014 for their project \u201cl\u2019Avan\u00e7 de POUM de Sant Jaume de Llierca\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He is associated professor at the department of urbanism and territorial planning (DUOT) of the Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Catalunya UPC_BarcelonaTECH since the year 2010 and teaching the Master \u201cMetropoli en Estudis Metropolitans I Urbans de l\u2019Institut d\u2019Estudis Regionals i Metropolitans de Barcelona (IERMB)\u201d at the Universitat Aut\u00f2noma de Barcelona since 2018. Furthermore he participated in various international seminars and workshops.<\/span><\/p>\n

From 2010 to 2015 he was secretary of the group of urbanist architects of Catalunya.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At the moment he is the head architect at the city hall of Barcelona.<\/span><\/p>\n
