El edificio formaba parte del proyecto de urbanizaci\u00f3n del primer ensanche de la ciudad. Se trata de un edificio de planta rectangular de planta baja y dos pisos con cubierta plana y fachada principal a la plaza de l\u2019Ajuntament. Destacan el gran portal y el balc\u00f3n corrido del piso principal. Delante de esta fachada, se conservan dos farolas de hierro originales. En 1932 fue reformado por el arquitecto Ramon Puig i Gairalt. Adem\u00e1s de casa consistorial, el edificio aloj\u00f3 las escuelas, el cuartel de la Guardia Civil y la biblioteca. El edificio se ampli\u00f3 en 1975 con un cuerpo adosado en su fachada posterior.
